Highlights! There’s nothing like them to create figures that seem to pop right out of the page. By using light crayons, pastels and chalk against dark backgrounds, rather than the standard shading with dark pencil or charcoal against dark paper, we can create images that truly glow. Better yet, use shading and highlights together to create drawings chock full of depth! Taught SLD’s Ann Mackowski, you can expect a fun and welcoming class full of visual stimulation with instruction, plenty of examples, targeted exercises, and the opportunity to ask questions as we go along and share and discuss one another’s work at the end of class..
In this class we’ll be learning
—How to create highlights using white or light coloured chalk, crayons, or pastels against dark backgrounds
—How to identify and map out highlights
—How to combine shading and highlights
And more!
This class is part of Soho Life Drawing’s mini-class series designed to give beginner, early-stage, and all-levels artists looking to learn more and exercise their skills a leg up. Choosing from a variety of poses and examples from contemporary art and art history, these comprehensive classes allow students to get a more in depth understanding of life drawing as well as one-on-one critiques for those who wish—who can send Ann a photo of one of their works from class for an additional visual mark-up.
