About this Research
This is an informal survey of the prevalence of synesthesia in people viewing waves or zigzags. Waves and zigzags are central to gesture drawing--a key compositional component of life drawing--and influence the way we feel about a subject in a number of different ways. Studies have shown that the act of drawing realistically can improve neural plasticity, increase creativity, and increase perceived wellness. The source of this increase in creativity is of particular interest to me because the concept of drawing realistically is not necessarily creative in and of itself. It could be that the action of translating the world into two dimensions while drawing realistically strengthens free association by reconnecting us with forms that provoke synesthestic experiences. Better understanding of the connection between art-making, visualisation, and the mind could improve the way figurative art is taught as well as offer mental health benefits to certain populations.
