We are pleased to announce that this August we will be hosting Soho Life Drawings first Summer Exhibition. The exact location will be determined after the 31st of May, once we know how many people will be exhibiting, and our budget. This exhibition is open to Soho Life Drawers of all skill levels. We’re honoured to call some of London’s finest professional and semi-professional artists members of our class. We can’t wait to see your masterpieces. However, we are equally honoured by the majority of beginners that attend our classes. We are just so impressed by, and proud of all of you who have the courage to venture into life drawing for the first time. You do so because you have a spark that most people do not have—an individualism and innate creativity that’s unfortunately stifled in our workaday lives. With your help, we hope that this show will encourage more people to step outside of their comfort zone, and to dispel the myth that the figurative work you see in galleries is the product of an innate ability. At the end of the day, drawing figuratively simply involves dedication, hard work, and most importantly, passion—and we’ve seen remarkable transformations in our class. In order to apply, please carefully read the terms and conditions below.

A big thanks to everyone who came to our Wednesday EDD at the Syrup of Soot (38 Museum Street). We were graced by Tiziana's languid, expressive poses and overwhelmed by another one of Frederique's culinary masterpieces. She's a renowned pastry chef who's agreed to help us with our goal of mixing fine cake still lives and life drawing (try some of her mouth-watering work at Syrup of Soot). We hope to see more of you for next weeks penultimate class!
As the festive season approaches we've started to make private bookings for Eat, Drink Draw events. If you would like to host an Eat, Drink Draw party yourself, do let us know! It's a great way to ring in the holidays with a completely novel event. Thank you everyone who came out last night for our first session with props. David did an absolutely incredible, sometimes eye-watering, high endurance work with a rope, beachball, scarf and mirror. We'll be continuing our work with props next week with Manko (regular class 6:15-7:15, props class 7:30-8:30). For those of you new to the idea--props give models an opportunity to illustrate muscle groups otherwise inaccessible through standard modelling. Anyway, take a look at some of our members fabulous work from last night! Hello Life Drawers!
We know we haven’t posted in a while—we’ve been super busy as SLD grows, and as we pursue our goal to bring art-making back to central London! Which brings us to our most exciting news. SLD is proud to introduce Eat, Drink & Draw in Bloomsbury (Syrup of Soot, 38 Museum Street WC1A 1LP; Wednesday from 6:-8:30 from November 15 to December 6). Eat, Drink & Draw is a collaborative effort that addresses two of our most basic needs—to eat cake, to drink and to draw. On the top floor members will draw an elaborate display of cakes and pastries to be eaten at fixed intervals. The elusive active still life, in other words, which changes as the night goes on. Think Renaissance still-lives with a modern twist and higher sugar content. On the bottom floor, we’ll have a life drawing class in one of Syrup of Soots beautifully ornate rooms. Enjoy a truly engaging life-drawing experience with multi-model views from the baroque mirror and evocative lighting. Attendees will be able to mingle and switch classes if they desire during the break, enjoy their own wine (£2 corkage fee), and maybe make some Wayne Thiebaud-esque paintings of the cafe’s pastry box display (or buy some to take home). We’re super excited and spaces are filling up fast so be sure to RSVP on the meetup page https://www.meetup.com/Eat-Drink-Draw/ . Alternately, you can e mail us here at [email protected] to be added to the list. Prices are £14/Session, or £50 if you sign up for all 4 classes upfront. Oil pastels are free to use, with a starter pack including a. A3 paper pad, solid graphite artist’s pencil and rubber available for only £10. Can’t wait to see what we all produce! -SLD Amazing new work last week by some very talented newcomers (Sofia and Agata). Keep an eye on these prodigies--we're guessing these works are going to be very valuable someday!
We're very much looking forward to drawing Carla and David this upcoming Monday! Hello Life Drawers! Good news for Manko and Thomas fans--these fabulous models will be gracing us with their presence tomorrow, and we just can't wait! As some of you know, Manko runs the fabulous Art Model Collective with Carla, who will be with us on the 8th. She's a real pro! As an artist himself, Thomas has an intuitive understanding of dynamic poses for life drawers. Check out his art at www.artofthomaselliot.com -- it may be worthwhile to ask him for some tips and tricks himself!
Here are some works from the last class by our fabulous artists who did a great job in capturing Ed and Floria--just wow. Please don't be shy and keep sending us and tagging your artwork--believe us, whether it's your first time ever drawing or you've been doing it for years, we've never seen a work we haven't been absolutely thrilled by. Have some confidence--others will see and learn something from your work that perhaps you can't see for yourself. In particular, beginner's drawings help inspire others to take up their pen or pencil as they see your work develop over time. Don't be shy--your work may change someone's life! Finally, after a long absence we'll be posting your work on our website www.soholifedrawing.com once more. Although we haven't updated it constantly as of late, we'd love to promote your work online. This page can give you a great chance to learn about the different styles our members employ; to see your work develop over time; and to show it to prospective buyers free of charge. Can't wait to see you tomorrow--big thanks to Jacquiline, Jen Moore, and other's who've let us show their work here! (sorry, forgot to write down names for each of these) So a very belated post about the goings on of 2017--We've gotten so busy we haven't had a chance to do any recent updates! We've also found that Instagram's an easier way to upload photos for us to archive later-- check us out, we're soholifedrawing on Instagram.
As always, we run every Monday, rain or shine (with the exception of bank holidays) from 5:50-6:45pm (taught class) and 7-9pm (usual). We've been so happy to see new beginners every week at SLD--although we have noticed a pattern of people insisting that they cannot draw to save their life getting hooked :) Hello Everyone! Just to remind you about our classes tomorrow--Frank will be teaching our 5:50-6:45 short class with Tiziana, and Andrew will be modelling for us for our 7-9 regular session. We've still got a few free drawing kits available if you RSVP early to our 7-9 session, so make sure to either e mail us at [email protected] or RSVP via meet up if you would like one!
So a very belated update on our first class of 2017! Thomas modelled for our first 5:50-6:45 Short Class we couldn't have asked for a better job--as you should be able to see from the art produced! Frank Gambino is an AMAZING teacher and we are so happy that he's going to be continuing to teaching the short class for the foreseeable future. Manko was fabulous for our 7-9 class--as usual she graced us with challenging, innovative and elegant poses, and we absolutely loved seeing the results in your work. We had quite a few newcomers to both classes, as well as our fabulous regulars, and seeing all of your wonderful work completely energised us for the new year!! Hey Guys! Life Drawing will resume on Monday (the 9th) for 2017! Manko's going to be modelling for us--she's a star--and we can't wait to draw her.
We've also got an announcement to make...we are going to be starting a short class that Monday from 5:50-6:45. This Monday's class will be taught by Frank Gambino, a figure drawing teacher at UCL, and will focus on the torso. Here's what's happening :) : Mondays, 5:50-6:45 Drop Ins Welcome £6.50 General £5.00 Student £30 for 6 sessions Fresh for the New Year, Soho Life Drawing's new 55 minute short session offers a dynamic introduction to life-drawing for beginners, and a chance for more experienced life drawers to hone their skills of observation. Each week we suggest focus on a particular part of the body in a five minute introduction (although you're free to draw whatever you like!), after which we have a 50 minute practical drawing session. Alternating new models every week, poses are specifically choreographed to emphasise the part of the figure being studied starting with one 5 minute pose, 3 ten minute poses, and a final 15 minute pose. After class, we provide tea and biscuits and a chance to mingle, chat, and show one another our work. The goal of this class is to make life-drawing affordable, accessible and welcoming. Located just a stone's throw from Trafalgar Square, our group offers a friendly and calming space to take a break from the stress of the day, sit down, and do something creative. Members taking the Short Class pay just £10 more for our 7-9 class. A belated thanks to all of you who came to draw Kate on Monday! This was such a fascinating class because to a one, you all created works that pushed boundaries in line, tone, and colour. There's an almost dreamy quality to them--a bit of Matisse and Chagall-- I know we're missing quite a few of your works so please send them to us if you have a chance, but in the meantime, take a look at these!! Our final class of 2016 is on the 19th--Andrew, who many of you might already know, is modelling for us. Classes will resume on the 9th of January
