Learn how to create evocative portraits full of depth and mystique in this beginner’s class where we’ll be learning how to use charcoal and chiaroscuro--the art of amping up light and dark values--to create gorgeous finished works. We’ll start the class by going over basics of portraiture including

—Facial Proportions and Mapping

—Drafting a Portrait

Then move on to

—What is Chiaroscuro

—Using Charcoal

—Creating a Charcoal Chiaroscuro Portrait

We’ll then move on to creating a finished portrait combining the techniques learned in class.

Feel free to bring both willow/vine charcoal and(ideally)/or compressed charcoal. Willow charcoal is soft and blends easily, whilst compressed charcoal leaves darker marks but does not blend as much. If you're able to bring both, you'll be able to push your values a bit darker--but bringing one or the other is fine.

Ann will be using plenty of on-screen demonstrations to show you exactly how to create chiaroscuro portraits, and for your final work, will be including helpful markups to show you the precise steps you’ll take to create a satisfying finished work.
