Intro to Gouache

In friendly all-levels class tutor Ann Mackowski will be teaching you techniques for using gouache, a medium with a wide range of applicabilities that, apart from its own properties, can be used to approximate both oil paintings and watercolours depending on its use. We’ll be covering
-History of Gouache
-Paint + Technique (brush-use, texture, layering, troubleshooting etc…)
-Drafting a Gouache Figure Painting
-Exercises in replicating Gouache Paintings of nude subjects + Creating our Own

Materials
-Painting Surfaces:
Mountboard (archival grade best) AND/OR Thick Paper (smooth surface), AND/ OR Card AND/OR Watercolour paper AND/OR Canvas primed with Acrylic or Oil primer(will work—just be prepared to have to use more paint/have more difficulty creating details)
*Gouache has a wide range of suitable surfaces on which to paint. You’ll get more details/need to use less with smoother paper, and need to apply more to rougher bases such as canvas
-Gouaches; Range of colours (minimum red, yellow, blue and white)
-Brushes: Synthetic Watercolour Brush*
*For Schiele Watercolour Class (April x) include Hogs Bristle Brush or equivalent
-Optional; Tube Watercolours
-2 cups water; paper towels/rags/other; hair dryer with cool setting if available
